Montessori School of Evergreen

Our School Community

Our mission is to prepare children for life.

At Montessori School of Evergreen, we pride ourselves on providing a dynamic, innovative, and mission-driven education to our students.

Welcome!

At Montessori School of Evergreen, academic excellence is achieved through innovation. We nurture a child’s innate curiosity, which empowers students to make choices in an environment that promotes accountability and responsibility.

Our talented and caring teachers authentically know each child and foster their strengths, support their areas of growth, while encouraging them to investigate their passions.

Advanced intellectual development

Advanced intellectual and academic development are only part of an MSE education. Our students also participate in diverse opportunities which build creativity, collaboration, social cognition, and character.

Beginning with the Kinder Year Night Hike and ending with our Middle School's international trip, we create meaningful learning opportunities that engage the academic, analytical, artistic, athletic, and emotional facets of every student.

Our Mission

Montessori School of Evergreen’s mission is to ignite a lifelong love of learning within each student. We provide meaningful experiences that fully engage young minds in the pursuit of academic excellence, self-reliance and the determination to contribute to our rapidly changing community and world.

Our Vision

“The world needs people who are inspired to embrace tomorrow’s possibilities.”

Our School Values

We are committed to the Montessori method

Our curriculum is based on the Montessori Method developed by Dr. Maria Montessori. Dr. Montessori was the first woman to earn a medical degree in Italy in 1896. She quickly became involved in education, developing a research-based method, grounded in child development and science. She understood that all children are born with unique strengths and areas of growth, and that they learn best when their education is individualized. Montessori recognized that children have sensitive periods in their development when they are particularly receptive to learning certain concepts. Her guiding principle was “follow the child.”

We believe in educating the whole child

Foundational to a Montessori education is the emphasis on a child’s emotional, social, creative, and physical development within an academically rigorous environment. Long before a large and ever-growing body of scientific research supported this approach, the Montessori Method embodied the idea that learning is most effectively achieved when the development of skills in one domain is recognized as interconnected with all others.

We believe in looking beyond one-size-fits-all

All children have a natural desire to learn. Our job, as educators, is to foster this desire through rigorous, relevant, meaningful lessons that encourage intellectual development, self-discipline, and self-knowledge.

The Montessori classroom and its exquisite materials are specifically designed for individualized student progress through a robust and comprehensive curriculum.

By honoring learning styles through varied and developmentally appropriate lessons, we provide a rich educational environment that fuels each child’s growth and cultivates the strength and confidence to leap forward in their growth when they are ready.

We believe that education is preparation for life

Maria Montessori believed that education was much more than an acquisition of academic content and a development of intellectual skills. In a Montessori classroom, children have choice about the order in which they complete their work and, indeed, the time they devote to both their responsibilities and their passions. This flexibility encourages the development of crucial executive function skills such as time-management, intrinsic motivation, prioritization, and self-reliance. These serve them not only throughout their schooling with us but also, by extension, into high-school, college and professional career.

We believe in teaching students how to learn

In today’s information-saturated world, the ability to memorize and regurgitate facts is rapidly losing its value. Instead, by teaching students how to break apart a problem, analyze it from all sides, think critically, and collaborate with others to build consensus and communicate a solution, we prepare students for all professions, including those that may not currently exist. Our entire curriculum reflects the core belief that creativity, curiosity, character, critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and cosmopolitanism are central to a student’s success in life.

We believe strength of character is essential to a safe & respectful learning environment

We know that strength of character must be nurtured and cultivated, and are thus deeply proud of our C.A.R.E. Character Program. By organizing around the principles of “Compassion, Attitude, Respect, and Excellence," our students develop the tools to be both true to themselves and active participants in an inclusive, dignified, and respectful community. When they occasionally fall short of these expectations – an inevitable and valuable part of the learning process – students experience the natural consequences of their behavior through a “Love & Logic” approach that encourages self-reflection, natural consequences and the development of self-control.

We respect failure as an opportunity for growth

Research demonstrates that it is through failure and perseverance that children develop true confidence and competence. One of our most important roles as adults is to step back and allow children to make mistakes and experience failure in a safe and supportive environment. Whether it is a poor grade, a missed deadline, or a forgotten lunch, children who are allowed to fail develop grit, resilience and confidence in their ability to deal with adversity.

We believe that powerful learning happens outside of the classroom.

With over 80 experiential trips off campus from preschool to middle school — from the KinderYear Night Hike to 10th Mountain Division hut trips, Model United Nations, international exchanges, and extensive opportunities for service-learning — our students have rich opportunities for real-world, hands-on applications of the concepts they are learning at school. The Montessori philosophy emphasizes the importance of children being in nature, and we use our natural mountain setting to its full advantage.

We invest in community

It takes a village to raise and educate a child. At Montessori School of Evergreen, we are a strong community of teachers, students, parents, grandparents, alumni, and community members coming together to provide our students with safe and nurturing environments in which to grow and thrive. We value a close partnership with our parents and depend on parent support to deliver our mission. Whether you support the school by volunteering in our classrooms, chaperoning on field trips and overnight trips, serving on a committee, or supporting our fundraising efforts through donations, your support and commitment are essential.
